Now established as one of our most fashion forward styles, the New Balance 550 may feel like a recent addition to the New Balance collection. But the 550 actually dates back to 1989 when it launched as a New Balance’s latest entry into the basketball shoe market. Utilising the talents of legendary sneaker designer Steven Smith, the 550 looked the part, with a chunky silhouette and design elements that echo the aesthetics of graffiti culture and pop art. Alas, the 550 didn’t get the hype that it deserved and was soon dropped.
New Balance 550 Women’s
Three decades after its original launch, the New Balance 550 - by then a largely forgotten relic of New Balance’s brief dalliance with the Basketball market – was resurrected. Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis is widely credited with rediscovering the style, having happened upon an old image of a mysterious low-top New Balance basketball shoe. Word spread and boosted by the trend for late-80s style trainers, the 550 quickly started to attract the sort of buzz it could have done with in 1989. New Balance responded to the hype and promptly rebuilt the trainer from scratch in collaboration with Aime Leon Dore.
